When I moved back to Regina in 2013 and had Parker, I had a lot of (completely in my head) pressure to look more "like a mom." My style has always been a bit, what might you call it, eclectic...loud....eccentric? Then I went back to work to be a teacher and the pressure doubled because now I needed to look like a mom AND a teacher and I had no idea how to do either. But I tried and hated every minute of it.
Enter Jules. I wanted to change things up and get back a little more of my style and someone recommended her. I booked my first appointment and left her chair feeling the most "me" I had in years. She didn't do anything super radical but she knew exactly what I needed to shake me out of my rut. That haircut was a game changer for me. Those of you that know me well know that I am not one to go on and on about hair and makeup but literally, this haircut helped me rediscover my confidence that had vanished somewhere between Vancouver and here.
Fast forward to 2021. Jules is still my hairdresser but now she is someone I also consider a friend. Over the last 7 years, we have shared secrets, tears over broken hearts, squeals over new relationships, and so so much more. I started taking my own kiddo there who is much more dramatic in the hair department than I ever will be. I've also converted Dyan, and her two kiddos, one of which is the aforementioned Big Ed. (Oh and as an interesting aside, I am in a coparenting relationship with my kiddo's father and his new partner, who I adore, also gets her hair cut by Jules). So like literally, Jules has become our family hairdresser. Everytime I book an appointment with her, it is self-care for my soul. I'm pretty sure she always books me extra time because we always have so much to say and share with one another. And every time I leave her chair, I rediscover that kick ass Raylee that I thought was lost to the good old days.
Jules works at a salon called BLK HRT which is owned by the equally fabulous Kayla. These two women have created an amazingly inclusive space where you walk in and feel like you are visiting an old friend that you haven't seen in ages. Even though Jules is my hairdresser, Kayla always remembers me, past haircuts and stories I've told, and just generally kicks ass at being an entrepeneur. Oh, and like did I also mention they just happen to give the best cuts, colours, undercut tattoos, and perms (yes, you heard me, I got an 80s perm) that you could ever want?
So thank you Jules and Kayla! From our family to the BLK HRT family, we love you!
I am really enjoying all these blog posts!
